With so much on offer in the Kimberley, narrowing down the most incredible sights can be very difficult! However, one of the true highlights of the region has to the incredible Horizontal Falls. Once you see this incredible natural phenomenon, you’ll never forget it and will want to return time and time again.
Let’s take a closer look at this must-see Kimberley feature and see why the great David Attenborough himself described the Horizontal Falls as “one of the greatest natural wonders of the world”.

A natural phenomenon

Located in Talbot Bay within the Buccaneer Archipelago, you’ll find the incredible Horizontal Falls. The ‘falls’ consist of two narrow gorges and during tidal movements, water is forced between the narrow gap and gives the incredible effect of a waterfall. The falls are only accessible by boat or plane. There are two gaps which make up the falls, one 20 metres apart and the other 10 metres apart. The tide variations can be up to 10 metres from high tide to low tide and the water surging through the gap can reach an incredible four metres high, also creating incredible whirlpools. It’s difficult to explain just how awe inspiring it is to see the water transform from calm enough to navigate a boat through to the gap, only to see it transform into a surging, waterfall effect.
In order to protect this stunning part of the world, the Lalang-garram/Horizontal Falls Marine Park was declared in 2016 and is co-managed by the Dambimangari traditional Aboriginal landowners of the area. The creation of the marine park around the Horizontal Falls means the area is monitored to allow for preservation of this natural wonder and the surrounding area.

Getting the best view

If you’re keen to check out the falls (and why wouldn’t you be?) then it’s best to find an operator who knows the area well. This will ensure that you get the best view possible when the tide is just right so you can really experience the full force of nature. The strong tidal surges can be dangerous but an experienced skipper will keep you well out of harm’s way. If you want a truly unique view, many cruises offer scenic helicopter rides where you can get a sweeping, birds eye view of the spectacle – if you get the opportunity, it’s well worth it!
