Gouldian Finch Colorful Birds Taking a Bath

One of the most iconic images that most people associate with the Kimberley area are those of towering waterfalls. The abundance of waterfalls in the region make it a true paradise for visitors and one of the most well known and beautiful examples is the stunning Mitchell Falls. Let’s take a closer look at this spectacular landmark so you can add it to your must-see list.

A spectacular sight

Nothing can quite prepare you for seeing Mitchell Falls for the first time and there’s a reason that it’s one of the most photographed sights of the area – with that in mind, don’t forget to have your camera at the ready! The falls look incredible year round but look particularly breathtaking after the wet season. The falls are located in the Mitchell River National Park and are comprised of four tiers of cascading water which is in stunning contrast to the surrounding red, rugged sandstone cliffs. Until you see it, it’s difficult to fathom the impressive size and thundering noise of the falls. When you’re visiting Mitchell Falls, make sure you pay a visit to Little Mertens Pool and take advantage of the natural spas to cool down.

Explore the area

The Mitchell Falls are beautiful but also difficult to access so put on your best hiking shoes before you set off to explore the area. Although it’s a bit of trek, it’s well signed and there are clear walking trails. In terms of timing, the best time to see the falls are when the wet season has provided enough rain for the falls to the flowing but when it’s dry enough to allow for access to the area. Although you can swim at the top of the falls (in fact, we encourage it – it’s beautiful!) swimming at the bottom of the falls is strictly prohibited due the cultural significance of the spot to traditional landowners. Not only that, there could be saltwater crocs around so you don’t want to risk it!

The incredible Mitchell River National Park

Of course, it’s not just the falls that will bring you to the Mitchell River National Park which is a breathtaking 115,300 hectare area full of cultural and ecological significance. With other waterfalls, rock pools, ancient Aboriginal rock art and unique plant and animal life, there’s plenty to see when you visit the area. The area holds particular cultural and spiritual significance for the Wunambal people of the Kimberley area.
