The humpback whales of the Kimberley

The massive humpback whale can grow up to 15 metres in length and can weigh up to 40 tonnes. They feed on krill, small fish and plankton and can go up to eight months without feeding during their migration. Humpback whales are well known for their incredible displays where they breach the water and roll in the air. If you see a humpback whale putting on a show, it’s something you’ll never forget!
The Kimberley is an important breeding ground for humpback whales and they migrate from Antarctica to spend June to October in the warm waters of the region so they can breed and have their calves. Although their population dropped due to whaling practices in the 1950s and 1960s, their numbers have surged since the last whaling station in Australia was closed in the 1970s. The Kimberley is lucky enough to be home to the world’s largest population of humpback whales, with the population estimated to be between 26,000 and 34,000 whales.

Experience the whales of the Kimberley

You can experience first-hand the humpback whales of the Kimberley between June and October where they enjoy the warm water while being sheltered amongst the Buccaneer and Bonaparte Archipelagos. Camden Sound, which is a body of water within the Buccaneer Archipelago, is a crucial breeding and calving ground for the humpback whales who visit the Kimberley and in 2009, the area became the Kimberley’s first Marine Park.
If you visit the Kimberley at the right time of the year, you can watch the annual migration of the region’s humpback whales and marvel at their acrobatic displays as they breach and slap the water with their fins and tail. Make sure you have your camera at the ready to capture these amazing creatures!
